City tax
Charged per person per night, in cash at the hotel, and never in the room rate.
ZTL and parking
Most historic centres are closed to cars. Ask the hotel to register your plate.
Reception hours
Small B&Bs are not staffed at night. Tell them your arrival time or you will wait.
Lifts and stairs
“Third floor, historic building” often means no lift. Ask before you book.
August closures
Coastal places run at full tilt; city hotels and their restaurants shut for weeks.
Air conditioning
Often on a building-wide timer, and legally off before a set date in spring.
